Getting started

How is it different from Apple Notes?

Apple Notes is a place to organise and store documents and information. MEMOROLL is a place to keep your days.

Every note quietly records its time and place, and your notes line up like a social timeline. Later, you can trace where you were and what was on your mind by date, in the calendar and on the map. No titles, no folders. The cursor is already in the input box when the app opens, so you can write the moment something comes to mind.

Is it free? Are there ads?

It is free. No ads, no in-app purchases, no paid membership. It will stay free and ad-free.

Do I need an account?

No. Install it and start writing. It never asks for an email address or a password.

Will it send me notifications?

Never. The only things on your MEMOROLL timeline are the things you wrote.

Data and privacy

Where are my notes stored?

On your iPhone. Your notes and photos never reach my servers. There are no usage analytics and no third-party tracking tools in the app.

The only time the app uses the network is to load the map background (the picture of roads and coastlines). What goes out is just which area of the map is needed — never the content of your notes. Map areas you have viewed stay on the device, so they show even with no signal.

What goes into iCloud?

Only if the settings are on, copies go to the “MEMOROLL” folder in your own iCloud Drive (both are on at first).

  • Save a copy: each time you write, the latest notes and photos are copied (MEMOROLL → latest)
  • Back up: the weekly backup (a ZIP) is placed there too (MEMOROLL → backups)

This is not sync. It is a one-way copy into your own iCloud, and I cannot see it. Turn a setting off and its copies are removed from iCloud Drive.

Can I sync? Can I use it on iPad or Mac?

For now, MEMOROLL is an iPhone app, and it has no sync. I wrote about why I took sync out in the essay “Why I took sync out of a notes app”.

Is there an Android version?

No. MEMOROLL is made for iPhone only, and there are no plans for Android.

Backups and restoring

Can I move my notes to a new iPhone?

Yes, in two ways.

  1. Move the whole iPhone: if you move to the new iPhone with Quick Start or an iCloud backup, your MEMOROLL notes come along.
  2. Import from the iCloud Drive copy: install MEMOROLL on the new iPhone, turn on iCloud Drive with the same Apple Account, then go to Settings › “Copy & restore” › “Import from the copy”.

If you turn off both “Save a copy to iCloud Drive” and “Back up to iCloud Drive”, notes and photos are also left out of your iPhone backup. If you lose the device, the data is lost with it.

How do backups work?

There are three layers.

  • A copy each time you write (latest, in iCloud Drive): the newest state
  • A weekly ZIP (the last three are kept): on the device and in iCloud Drive (backups). For going back a little after an accidental delete or a damaged database
  • Manual export: Settings › “Export as ZIP”. Save it anywhere you like. Bring it back with “Import a ZIP / JSON”

Importing never overwrites: if a note already exists, the one on the device is kept.

What happens when I delete a note?

The note and its photos are removed from the device completely (since 1.2.1), and from the iCloud Drive copy (latest) a few seconds later. It cannot be undone.

Weekly ZIPs taken before you deleted it still contain it. Only the last three are kept, so it is gone from the backups too after about three weeks. ZIPs you exported yourself stay as they are.

Using MEMOROLL

Do I have to use location?

No, it is your choice. Turn it on or off with the iOS permission and Settings › “Record location”. With it off, everything except the map still works.

Location is stored with the note on your iPhone and sent nowhere. It is kept as coordinates (latitude and longitude), not place names. When you share a note, the coordinates are included in the shared text.

A note I wrote after midnight shows up under the previous day.

That is because the day changes at 4 a.m., not at midnight — so a note written late at night stays with the day it belongs to.

Does the widget show what I wrote?

Not at first. The Home Screen widget shows only today’s note count and how long since you last wrote. To show the text, turn on Settings › “Show latest note” (anyone who sees your Home Screen can read it, so take care).

A note I kept on the Lock Screen disappeared.

“Keep on Lock Screen” shows a note only while you need it. It goes away when you mark the task as done, when you remove it, or after about 8 hours (the 8 hours is set by iOS).

Tap a note and choose it from the actions. It works on iPhone with iOS 16.2 or later. If nothing appears, check that Live Activities are on in the iPhone’s Settings › MEMOROLL.

Which languages does it support?

The app is in English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish and Korean. It follows your iPhone’s language (English on iPhones set to other languages). You can also choose in the app’s Settings › “Language”.

Which iOS versions does it support?

iPhone with iOS 15 or later. Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets need iOS 17 or later; Control Center, the Action button and Siri need iOS 18 or later; Keep on Lock Screen needs iOS 16.2 or later.
